Background
Oroville in Butte County, N. California, has the nickname 'The City of Gold', its name being a combination of 'oro', the Spanish word for gold, and 'ville', which is French for town. And it's an appropriate name, for it was at the heart of the California gold rush in the mid-1800s, when it was home to thousands of prospectors. Then, as in other mining towns, Oroville had gambling houses catering to those miners who struck gold. Now, the wheel has turned full-circle as Oroville plays host to two large casinos, the Feather Falls and the Gold Country Casino & Hotel.
The Gold Country Casino & Hotel, owned by the Tyme Maidu Tribe of Berry Creek Rancheria, prides itself on delivering the best possible customer experience: Jacuzzis in guest bedrooms, three eateries serving food to suit all tastes, a wide range of entertainment in its 1200-seat showroom, 400-seat bingo area, 25 gaming tables and 900 slots—altogether an impressive package.
The casino management is constantly seeking ways of enhancing customer experience. One area they looked at recently was slots: how to make it easier for players to insert bills and tickets; how to ensure valid bills are accepted first time; how to maximize in-service availability. Money Controls' Ardac Elite bill and barcode ticket acceptor promised to answer all of these needs, so after seeing it demonstrated, Slots Manager, Al Marquez, obtained permission from the Tribal Counsel to carry out a full trial.
Solution
Eric Winston of James Industries, Money Controls' North America casino partner, installed Ardac Elites in eight of Gold Country's slots in February, the whole process taking less than two hours. Over the next three months their performance was monitored for acceptance rate and reliability.
And Ardac Elite did not disappoint, as Al Marquez explained: "I can honestly say that the units lived up to Money Controls' claims: the acceptance rate was consistently above 98%, even though many of the bills were torn and tattered; as for reliability, the units just kept on working.
Result
"We asked players for their reactions and it was very pleasing to hear their comments: 'I don't have to align bills; the slot just seems to accept them' was typical of the response. They certainly seem happy with Ardac Elite. And if our players are happy, then I'm happy," concluded Al Marquez.
